In 2018, actors Romane Bohringer and Philippe Rebbot co-wrote, co-directed and co-starred in the feature film L’Amour flou, recounting the true story of their real-life romantic breakup. Uncoupling is the series version of that same enchanting story. After living together for 10 years, now with two kids and a pooch they adore, Romane and Philippe are no longer in love. But they still care about one another. Maybe too much to split up completely. So, to the utter bewilderment of all their loved ones, they decide to create the “separtment” — two separate apartments, each of which adjoins the kid’s bedroom. That unconventional set-up proves to be miraculous in all sorts of ways. The tensions between them all but disappear. Now they’re dear friends. And the kids are thrilled to have both parents at home. But that doesn’t make their daily lives any less wacky.
Raised by her father, actor Richard Bohringer, Romane Bohringer grew up on film sets, imagining that she’d become a screenwriter or camerawoman when she grew up. Nevertheless, she made her on-screen debut at 10, alongside her father, in La Bête noire (1983), and soon turned to the theater, playing Miranda in Peter Brook’s staging of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Her breakout film was opposite Cyril Collard in his powerful AIDS drama, Savage Nights (1992), which nabbed four César Awards, including Best Film and a Most Promising Actress Award for Bohringer. She has appeared in 84 films, among them Claude Miller’s The Accompanist (1992), Martine Dugowson’s Mina Tannenbaum (1994), Agnieszka Holland’s Total Eclipse (1995), Richard Bohringer’s The City Is Beautiful at Night (2006), and Alain Tasma’s TV movie Le Viol (2017). She wrote and directed her first short, Ti Tengu caru in 2005. In 2018, Bohringer and Rebbot’s first feature L’Amour flou was nominated for a César Award for Best First Film.
