(Julie - Laure Calamy, best known to American audiences as the character of Noémie on the much-loved Netflix series "CALL MY AGENT!" - is in a race against the clock in Éric Gravel‘s kinetic second opus, Full Time, which presents the daily routine of a work-a-day mom as a high-stakes intrigue. Nervous, pulsing music building on the soundtrack, its heroine constantly running, the film almost plays like a thriller. But Julie is simply the single mother of two young children, living in the suburbs, with a very long commute back and forth to her demanding job as head chambermaid at a ritzy Paris hotel. She has a lot of balls to keep in the air to make it all work — convincing her nanny not to quit, making sure her ex sends child support payments on time, planning birthday parties, etc. That’s on a normal day, and not including tending the kids and the pressure she’s under at work. Julie no sooner lands an interview for a plum marketing job more suited to her professional and educational experience… when a general transit strike is announced. Everything grinds to a halt, obstacles multiply, delays and complications snowball… until it’s almost a matter of life and death. As Julie, Laure Calamy’s breathless, pitch-perfect performance keeps us on the edge of our seats from start to finish.)

La nuit du 12 est un film magnifique. Dominique Moll a réalisé ce film d'une manière très intelligent. Il mérite César(s). Je ne comprends pas pourquoi Hawa n'a pas été nominé.

*** Did you miss it at THE AMERICAN FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL 2022? *** Opening this week in French theatres: "DIVERTIMENTO", a biopic, musical, drama co-written by Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar, starring Oulaya Amamra, Lina El Arabi, Niels Arestrup, Zinedine Soualem. International Premiere at THE AMERICAN FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL 2022. Now playing in French theatres.

(Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar‘s powerful seventh feature, Divertimento, plunges us, heart and soul, into the voluptuous world of classical music. At times weaving a rich tapestry of sound and melodies to express what’s going on in her heroine’s head, the film recounts the inspiring, true story of Zahia Ziouani. A determined, gifted 17-year-old musician, Zahia has but one dream — to become a conductor. Music is her life; it’s a love she shares with her entire family. Yet, in 1995, all odds seem to be stacked against her. First and foremost, she’s a woman. The daughter of Algerian immigrants. From a working-class background. None of that plays well at her stuffy Parisian conservatory, or at the competitions she embarks upon. Her path is strewn with obstacles. Yet, in her drive to make symphonic music accessible to one and all, she somehow creates the culturally-diverse Divertimento orchestra, based in her own Parisian immigrant neighborhood. The real-life Zahia continues to conduct that orchestra to this day. Watching this ode to one young woman’s musical passion, it’s almost impossible not to feel one’s heart soar..

Godard by Howard Rodman, Screenwriter and Novelist, member of the Writers Guild of America West

“If you were to speak of a difficult genius who reinvented an art form, created masterpieces that will endure forever, then sent it all crashing down, the better to reinvent it again, all the while with his back turned to the audience— Why that would be Miles Davis. Or Jean-Luc Godard.”…
