DIARY OF A CHAMBERMAID<\/h2>\nDIARY OF A CHAMBERMAID<\/h2>\n| 2016 \u2013 108\u2032 \u2013 Drama, Crime, Film & Literature <\/p>\n L\u00e9a Seydoux follows in the footsteps of Paulette Goddard and Jeanne Moreau as C\u00e9lestine, a resentful young Parisian chambermaid who finds herself exiled to a position in the provinces where she immediately chafes against the noxious iron rules and pettiness of her high-handed bourgeois mistress (Clotilde Mollet), must rebuff the groping advances of Monsieur (Herv\u00e9 Pierre), and reckon with her fascination with the earthy, brooding gardener Joseph (Vincent Lindon). Backtracking past the fetishism of Bu\u00f1uel\u2019s version to Octave Mirbeau\u2019s original 1900 novel, Beno\u00eet Jacquot has one eye on contemporary France: the sense of social stiflement, C\u00e9lestine\u2019s humiliating submission to Madame\u2019s onerous terms of employment, Joseph\u2019s virulent anti-Semitism.
