In one of those wonderful coincidences of history, lumi\u00e8re,\u00a0the French word for \u201clight,\u201d was also the last name of brothers Auguste and Louis, whose brilliant invention, the cinematograph, helped to inaugurate the most beloved art form of the last 130 years. Institute Lumi\u00e8re director Thierry Fr\u00e9maux uses\u00a0Lumi\u00e8re, Le Cinema!\u00a0to guide the viewer through over a hundred shorts\u2014some famous, some forgotten, some never before seen\u2014directed by Lumi\u00e8re and company. In the process, Fr\u00e9maux illuminates how the brothers employed the camera as a creative instrument as they (and their operators) mastered framing, staging, and subject selection for quotidian and exotic microdocumentaries as well as the first ever fictional motion pictures. The result is not only a glorious re(telling) of the genesis of cinema but a profound meditation on the beautiful world captured\u2014and the mysterious world imagined\u2014by the Lumi\u00e8res.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
