Michel Blanc\u2019s nuanced performance,\u00a0Patrice Leconte\u2018s refined visual style, and Denis Lenoir\u2019s moody cinematography are perfectly in sync with George Simenon\u2019s elegant prose in this beautiful adaptation of the author\u2019s 1933 detective novel,\u00a0Les Fian\u00e7ailles de Monsieur Hire.\u00a0 More an in-depth study of loneliness, longing and betrayal than a murder mystery, the film is made up of minute, carefully-observed details, placing its central character \u2014 a fastidious, reclusive tailor with an inclination toward voyeurism \u2014 under a veritable microscope.\u00a0 Its telling manages to be simultaneously sensual and austere\u2026 and finally, heartbreaking.\u00a0 Unapologetically romantic,\u00a0Monsieur Hire\u00a0is very different from the searing social indictment of Julien Duvivier\u2019s 1946 adaptation of the same story,\u00a0Panic, or of the original novel itself.\u00a0 Leconte has chosen, instead, to paint a restrained portrait of vulnerability and unrequited love, set to the lush, rhapsodic phrases of Brahms Piano Quartet in G Minor.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
