Paul used to make a decent living as a photographer, but has given that up to become a writer. “Remaining a writer,” he says, “was another story.” When his ex-wife and kids move to Montreal, Paul crashes in a borrowed basement hovel to focus on just that, doing menial odd jobs just to scrape by. Named <\/span>Best Screenplay<\/b> at this year’s<\/b> Venice Film Festival<\/b>, <\/span>At Work<\/i><\/b> recounts the workaday tale of a struggling artist \u2013 determined to find meaning in his work and desperately clutching his freedom with both hands \u2013 with elegance and touching simplicity. The film also offers a peek into the harsh reality of life in a gig economy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Director’s biography<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Writer\/director <\/span>Val\u00e9rie Donzelli<\/b> launched her career as an actor in the title role of Sandrine Veysset\u2019s <\/span>Martha Martha<\/span><\/i> (2001), which premiered at the Cannes Director\u2019s Fortnight.\u00a0 She has since appeared in more than 70 films, including Anne Fontaine\u2019s <\/span>In His Hands<\/span><\/i> (COLCOA 2006) and the TV series <\/span>Clara Sheller<\/span><\/i> (2005).\u00a0 She made her feature directorial debut with <\/span>Queen of Hearts<\/span><\/i> (2009), which was presented in Locarno. Her second feature, <\/span>Declaration of War<\/span><\/i> (2011), premiered in Cannes and went on to become a critical and box-office hit. That was followed by the TV series <\/span>Nona and Her Daughters<\/span><\/i> (COLCOA 2021), <\/span>Just the Two of Us<\/span><\/i> (TAFFF 2023), and the feature documentary <\/span>Rue du Conservatoire<\/span><\/i> (2024). <\/span>At Work<\/i><\/b> premiered in this year’s Venice Film Festival, where it garnered the Golden Osella for Best Screenplay and the Premio Fondazione Fai Persona Lavoro Ambiente Award for the Treatment of Work-related Issues.<\/span><\/p>\n
