Synopsis<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Adapted from Albert Camus’ 1942 existentialist novella, <\/span>The Stranger<\/i><\/b> follows Meursault, an emotionally detached Frenchman living in 1930s colonial Algeria. After killing an Arab, Meursault’s indifference to social norms and apparent lack of grief at his mother’s funeral are scrutinized in minute detail during his trial. Virtuoso French director <\/span>Fran\u00e7ois Ozon<\/b>‘s compelling take on Camus’ chilling masterwork is extremely faithful in tone, yet enriched by his meticulous black-and-white <\/span>mise-en-sc\u00e8ne<\/span><\/i>, his contemporary take on the story’s colonial context, and his razor-sharp focus on Benjamin Voisin’s starkly exquisite central performance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Director’s biography<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Fran\u00e7ois Ozon<\/b> is one of the most provocative filmmakers to emerge from the 1990s wave of talented new directors. After earning a Master’s degree in cinema studies, Ozon attended La Femis film school and began to churn out inventive shorts, like <\/span>A Summer Dress<\/span><\/i> (1996), which won the Best Narrative Short Award at L.A. Outfest and was nominated for a C\u00e9sar Award. His first feature, <\/span>Sitcom<\/span><\/i>, premiered in Cannes in 1998. Ozon has directed 49 films to date \u2014 26 of them features.\u00a0 Among his many awards, he’s nabbed three prizes in Berlin: for <\/span>Water Drops on Burning Rocks<\/span><\/i> (2000); the musical <\/span>8 Women<\/span><\/i> (2002); and <\/span>By the Grace of God<\/span><\/i> (2018), his piercing examination of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. He’s won six prizes in San Sebasti\u00e1n: for <\/span>Hideaway<\/span><\/i> (2009), <\/span>In the House<\/span><\/i> (COLCOA 2013), <\/span>Young & Beautiful<\/span><\/i> (COLCOA 2014), <\/span>The New Girlfriend<\/span><\/i> (2014), <\/span>Peter von Kant<\/span><\/i> (TAFFF 2022), and <\/span>When Fall Is Coming<\/span><\/i> (2024). <\/span>The Crime Is Mine<\/span><\/i> (TAFFF 2023) was the opening film of the Festival Premiers Plans d’Angers.
