Born in Paris and raised in colonial West Africa, her work has often explored the political and human themes of colonialism and its aftermath through a very personal, often intensely sensual lens. After working as an assistant director for such groundbreaking filmmakers as Jacques Rivette, Costa-Gavras and Wim Wenders in the &#8217;70s and &#8217;80s, she burst onto the international scene in 1988 with her semi-autobiographical, critically-acclaimed first feature <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chocolat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which debuted in Cannes and was nominated for a C\u00e9sar for Best First Film.
