Director <\/span>C\u00e9dric Klapisch<\/b> has long been fascinated by the dance; it’s a theme that has run through his work since his 2008 film <\/span>Paris<\/span><\/i>, about a chorus boy awaiting a heart transplant.\u00a0 He’s directed two documentaries, on one dancer and four choreographers at the Op\u00e9ra de Paris.\u00a0 His last feature, <\/span>Someone, Somewhere<\/span><\/i>, ends with an enchanting kompa dance lesson.\u00a0 And his short Zoom montage of ballet dancers rehearsing at home during the first Covid lockdown literally went viral on YouTube.\u00a0 With <\/span>Rise<\/i><\/b>, the director embraces that passion, no holds barred, and in doing so, offers us his most sumptuously beautiful film to date.\u00a0 The story is a simple one.\u00a0 Elise, a ballerina with the prestigious Op\u00e9ra de Paris, is about to dance her first starring role.\u00a0 Mid-performance she slips, injures herself and is told she may never dance again.\u00a0 That news, which could be the end of any dancer’s career, becomes an awakening for Elise, as she sets off to discover what life has in store for her.\u00a0 The film stars Marion Barbeau, <\/span>premier danseur<\/span><\/i> with the Op\u00e9ra de Paris, in her first dramatic role.\u00a0 Moving from ballet to break-dance to modern dance, Klapisch sets us on a journey through an entire universe of movement, from the lyrical world of classical ballet to a final life-affirming explosion of Hofesh Shechter’s pulsing contemporary choreography.<\/span><\/p>\n

After majoring in cinema studies at the Sorbonne, writer\/director <\/span>C\u00e9dric Klapisch<\/b> shot his first short, <\/span>In Transit<\/span><\/i>, as a graduate student at NYU in 1986.\u00a0 His second short, <\/span>Ce qui me meut<\/span><\/i>, nabbed the Best Short Film Award from the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics and a C\u00e9sar nomination.\u00a0 In 1992, <\/span>Riens du tout<\/span><\/i> was nominated for a Best First Feature C\u00e9sar.
