The opening film at this year’s Cannes Film Festival was the wacky gore-fest <\/span>Final Cut<\/i><\/b>, a remake of Shin’ichir\u00f4 Ueda’s no-budget Japanese mega-hit zombie movie, <\/span>One Cut of the Dead<\/span><\/i>, about a filmmaker making a no-budget zombie movie in which the cast and crew, one by one, actually turn into zombies.\u00a0 It doesn’t get any more meta than this, and Oscar-winning director <\/span>Michel Hazanavicius<\/b> plays that silliness for all it’s worth.\u00a0 While what’s on screen unfolds in typical cheesy B-movie fashion, it’s the off-screen mishaps and debacles that genuinely push the film into the realm of high farce.\u00a0 More comedy than horror film or zombie flick, <\/span>Final Cut<\/span><\/i> revels in its goofy lowbrow genre-movie fun!<\/span><\/p>\n

Academy Awards winner<\/span> Michel Hazanavicius<\/b> began his career as a director of commercials and television projects.\u00a0 In 1999, he wrote and directed his first feature, <\/span>Mes amis<\/span><\/i>. His next film, the James Bond parody, <\/span>OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies<\/span><\/i> (COLCOA 2008), was such a box office hit, it spawned the equally successful sequel, <\/span>OSS 117: Lost in Rio<\/span><\/i> (COLCOA 2009).\u00a0 Hazanavicius burst onto the international scene with the release of his almost silent film, <\/span>The Artist<\/span><\/i> (2011), starring his <\/span>OSS 117<\/span><\/i> star Jean Dujardin.\u00a0 A smash critical and popular hit, that film garnered 162 awards worldwide, including a Palme d’Or, Best Actor and Palm Dog Awards in Cannes; five Oscars and five BAFTA Awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor prizes each time; six C\u00e9sar Awards; three Golden Globes; a Best Director Award from the DGA; and was named Best Film of 2011 by the New York Film Critics Circle and the London Critics Circle.\u00a0 That was followed by <\/span>The Search<\/span><\/i> (COLCOA 2015), <\/span>Godard Mon Amour<\/span><\/i> (2017), and <\/span>The Lost Prince<\/span><\/i> (2020).\u00a0 After opening at Cannes, <\/span>Final Cut<\/i><\/b> enjoyed a lively commercial success in France this summer.<\/span><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][mk_image src=”https:\/\/theamericanfrenchfilmfestival.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/final-cut_eng-scaled.jpg” image_size=”full” frame_style=”gray_border” align=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
