A group of astonishingly gifted newcomers turn in powerful performances in this first feature from former casting directors <\/span>Lise Akoka<\/b> and <\/span>Romane Gueret<\/b>.\u00a0 Falling somewhere between an ethical critique on the long French tradition of casting non-professional street kids in <\/span>“banlieue”<\/span><\/i> films, and an homage to that very genre, <\/span>The Worst Ones<\/i><\/b> uses a film-within-a-film structure to recount the story of a somewhat manipulative middle-aged Belgian director shooting a film in a housing project in northern France.\u00a0 While the director unapologetically purloins elements from the personal lives of his young cast, it’s the nuance and emotional range of those very actors \u2014 clearly due to the talents of this film’s directors \u2014 that catch us off guard and give the film its poignant punch.<\/span><\/p>\n

A cinema-studies graduate of the Sorbonne, <\/span>Romane Gueret<\/b> began her career as an assistant director, casting assistant and camerawoman.\u00a0 <\/span>Lise Akoka<\/b> studied psychology and acting before becoming a casting director and children’s acting coach.\u00a0 The two women met in 2014, while casting a feature film for which they auditioned more than 4,000 non-professional child actors.\u00a0In 2015, they co-directed the short film\u00a0<\/span>Chasse<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>Royale<\/span><\/i>, which won the Illy Prize at the 2016 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, was nominated for a C\u00e9sar Award for Best Short Film, and snagged <\/span>two<\/b> prizes at COLCOA in 2017<\/b>.\u00a0 They went on to co-direct\u00a0the documentary\u00a0<\/span>Allez gar\u00e7on !<\/span><\/i>\u00a0for Canal+ (2018), and the web series <\/span>Tu pr\u00e9f\u00e8res<\/span><\/i> (2020), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and aired on Arte.\u00a0 <\/span>The Worst Ones<\/i><\/b>, their first feature film,\u00a0was named Best Film of the <\/span>Un Certain Regard section of<\/span> this year’s Cannes Film Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][mk_image src=”https:\/\/theamericanfrenchfilmfestival.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/les-pires-copy.jpg” image_size=”full” frame_style=”gray_border” align=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
