and illustrates the oppression of Blacks, from slavery to the Watts riots.\u00a0 The film cost $150K to produce and took in $15.2 million at the box-office, to become the highest-grossing independent film of all time.\u00a0 Hollywood took notice and, in response, created a whole new genre, churning out cheap blaxploitation pictures.\u00a0 In Van Peeble&#8217;s own words, &#8220;Hollywood took my formula, diminished the concept of Negritude to a flamboyant cartoon, and reversed the political message, turning it into a counter-revolutionary one&#8230;\u00a0 And <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voil\u00e0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!&#8221;\u00a0 Despite the fact that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweet Sweetback <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has inspired many filmmakers of color to make movies outside the Hollywood machine and mindset, its message is sadly just as relevant today as it was 50 years ago.\u00a0 This fascinating documentary is the story of that saga.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Catherine Bernstein<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;s first short film, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zohra on the Beach<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1996) was honored at the Locarno Short Film Festival. She went on to direct numerous award-winning documentaries for television, including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Murder of a Hatmaker<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2006); <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le voyage encyclop\u00e9dique de Michel Serres<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2008); <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asylum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2008); <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naked<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2009); <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alan Turing, The Code of Life<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2013); <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le Libraire<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2015); <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T4, un m\u00e9decin sous le nazisme<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2016); and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fritz Bauer: Prosecutor of the Nazis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2018).\u00a0 Sorbonne graduate <\/span><b>Martine Delumeau<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> currently teaches at La F\u00e9mis film school in Paris.\u00a0 Her documentaries for Arte, France 5 and France 2 have focused on immigration, racial discrimination, health in the workplace, and the disabled. They include <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dassler contre Dassler, Adidas contre Puma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2014) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le v\u00e9ritable co\u00fbt de l&#8217;immigration<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2015).
