On January 5, 1895, Alfred Dreyfus, a young Jewish soldier, is degraded for spying for Germany and is sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil’s Island. Among the witnesses to his humiliation is Georges Picquart, who is promoted to run the military counter-intelligence unit that tracked him down. Although not yet thirty, Diane has a high level job working for a multinational corporation run by Henri-Pierre Volf. In the logic of the diversification of its activities – from real estate to clothing design – the Volf Group is negotiating the acquisition of TokyoAnime, a Japanese company which produces a new form of manga, and its pornographic version, hentaï, in digital 3D images that will outdate and destroy the competition in this extraordinarily lucrative market. Two companies, Mangatronics and Demonlover, battle to obtain exclusive distribution rights to Volf’s new images on the Web. Mangatronics has recruited Diane as a kind of industrial spy to serve its interests by torpedoing the Demonlover contract from within. Should the links between Demonlover and various violent and illegal pornographic sites become known, they would dangerously weaken its relationship with the Volf Group, unaware of the existence of these secret sites. Diane discovers that the sites’ spies – in the form of her seemingly neutral, naive colleagues – have also infiltrated the Wolf Group, which in turn has its own spies keeping tabs. Her increasing knowledge makes her a danger to Demonlover. Soon there is no way out, except to be absorbed into cyberspace, of which she was perhaps already a part right from the start.

Cleverly evoking the era of analogue espionage while referencing political events in France, this slow burning thriller takes a man wallowing on the outskirts of society and plunges him deep into the murky heart of power politics, high intrigue, and murder. François Cluzet plays Duval, former accountant, former alcoholic, current burnout with no job prospects. Desperate to get his life back on track, he accepts an unusual offer of employment. Everyday he is to come to a non-descript room, where he will transcribe cassette tapes of intercepted phone calls using an old typewriter. His mysterious employer Clément explains that this ensures that there will be no chance for the material to be digitally compromised. Most of the work is dehumanizing drudgery, but when the tapes reveal something Duval knows he shouldn’t know, he suddenly understands why he has been sworn to secrecy. It’s clear he’s a cog in someone’s machinations, but whose? As the walls begin to close in, Duval’s own paranoia is the only thing of which he can be certain.

Justice knows no border for Hamid (Adam Bessa), who has taken refuge in France after being detained and tortured by the Assad regime in Syria. Academy Award Winner writer/director Michel Hazanavicius’ easy, unpretentious, and stealthily smart comedic style found its perfect vehicle in a send-up that spoofed not just the spies, but the preposterous chauvinism of the ‘60’s. Riffing on the Jean Bruce created character OSS 117, aka Hubert Bonnisseur de la Bath – who incidentally predates Ian Fleming’s James Bond – the film is an affectionate, richly detailed period pastiche. And the irresistible, mischievous charm of actor Jean Dujardin was never put to better comic purpose as the man France dispatches to Cairo with one absurdly simplistic mission: to make the Middle East safe.
