François Truffaut is drunk on the possibilities of cinema in this, his most playful film. Part thriller, part comedy, part tragedy, SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER relates the adventures of mild-mannered piano player Charlie (Charles Aznavour, in a triumph of hangdog deadpan) as he stumbles into the criminal underworld and a whirlwind love affair. Loaded with gags, guns, clowns, and thugs, this razor-sharp homage to the American gangster film is pure nouvelle vague.

Director Nicolas Boukhrief exhibits extraordinary elegance and psychological restraint in bringing master crime writer Pierre Lemaitre’s own adaptation of his haunting 2016 novel to the screen. His talented cast only amplifies that same judiciousness in breathing life into a series of well-drawn, complex characters. Their story opens on Christmas day 1999, in a small Belgian village, at the apex of three tumultuous days in the life of 12-year-old Antoine. Three days that will impact the trajectory of his entire life. A taut, suspenseful character study, Three Days and One Life is a heartbreaking, gripping thriller about missteps and terrible secrets, and the enormous toll they take on one boy’s life.

Late one night, Aly calls police emergency services. She’s in danger. Anna takes the call. Dary is arrested. Years pass. And Aly, Anna and Dary confront the reverberations of a terrifying night they can’t leave behind. A follow-up to her Oscar-nominated short, A Sister, Delphine Girard‘s debut feature opens as a kind of thriller, but quickly segues into a psychological study of the aftermath of a crime and the lifelong impact it leaves on those in its wake. It also delves into the gray area of consent and the ripple effect of violence on various secondary characters and family members. While the judicial system and law enforcement institutions grapple with how to deal with “victimhood” and the seemingly incomprehensible responses we make when faced with violence and emotional trauma, Through the Night ultimately finds resilience and healing in a kind of sisterhood of mutual love and unconditional support.

| 1989 (New Release: 2022) – 80′ – Digitally restored -Thriller, Crime, Drama, Film Noir, Classic.

A Cohen Media Group release. |

Michel Blanc’s nuanced performance, Patrice Leconte‘s refined visual style, and Denis Lenoir’s moody cinematography are perfectly in sync with George Simenon’s elegant prose in this beautiful adaptation of the author’s 1933 detective novel, Les Fiançailles de Monsieur Hire.  More an in-depth study of loneliness, longing and betrayal than a murder mystery, the film is made up of minute, carefully-observed details, placing its central character — a fastidious, reclusive tailor with an inclination toward voyeurism — under a veritable microscope.  Its telling manages to be simultaneously sensual and austere… and finally, heartbreaking.  Unapologetically romantic, Monsieur Hire is very different from the searing social indictment of Julien Duvivier’s 1946 adaptation of the same story, Panic, or of the original novel itself.  Leconte has chosen, instead, to paint a restrained portrait of vulnerability and unrequited love, set to the lush, rhapsodic phrases of Brahms Piano Quartet in G Minor.
