In February 1965, during the Cold War, a Soviet project involving an orbital bomb threatens the geopolitical balance of the world. The French secret service hires Francis Mareuil, an aerospace engineer, to recruit Boris Golubev, the scientist whose research made this bomb possible. In Moscow, the KGB puts Boris under surveillance by forcing his daughter Lyudmila to spy on him.

Academy Award Winner writer/director Michel Hazanavicius’ easy, unpretentious, and stealthily smart comedic style found its perfect vehicle in a send-up that spoofed not just the spies, but the preposterous chauvinism of the ‘60’s. Riffing on the Jean Bruce created character OSS 117, aka Hubert Bonnisseur de la Bath – who incidentally predates Ian Fleming’s James Bond – the film is an affectionate, richly detailed period pastiche. And the irresistible, mischievous charm of actor Jean Dujardin was never put to better comic purpose as the man France dispatches to Cairo with one absurdly simplistic mission: to make the Middle East safe.

This high-profile Canal + production immerses us in the daily dramas taking place in a top-secret department of French Intelligence. Eric Rochant’s brainchild leaves behind the explosions and the gunplay in favor of a more restrained and sober look at the Bureau of Legends, where agents hone elaborate undercover identities (legends) by mastering entirely new skill sets and professions. In the first season, top agent Guillaume Debailly (Mathieu Kassovitz) returns to Paris after a six-year mission in Damascus as Paul Lefebvre, professor of literature. But when Paul’s lover Nadia comes to Paris as well, Guillaume decides to maintain a double life as Paul, despite being under the microscope of bureau psychiatrist Dr Balmes. Meanwhile, the Legends team works to rescue Cyclone, an operative in Algeria who has disappeared under suspicious circumstances. In season 2, Guillaume, now deputy director of the department, becomes a double agent for the CIA.
