Too small, too temperamental, and too unpredictable, the horse has many flaws but also has remarkable poise and abilities. From competition to competition, horse and rider progress and impose themselves in the horse-riding world. But the Olympic Games in Los Angeles are a terrible failure and Pierre becomes aware of his weaknesses. With help from Nadia, his wife, and Raphaëlle, Jappeloup’s groom, Pierre wins the horse’s trust and builds a relationship which will lead them both to the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988.

Were George Mallory and Andrew Irvine the first men to scale Mount Everest in 1924? That innocent question, challenging recorded mountaineering history, launches a young Japanese photo-journalist on his own philosophical path of discovery in Patrick Imbert’s elegantly animated adaptation of Jiro Taniguchi’s and Baku Yumemakura’s manga masterpiece. Meticulous graphics and pitch-perfect sound design convey both the thrill of the quest and the film’s heightened sense of impending danger at each vertiginous step. The Summit of the Gods is ultimately a suspenseful, profound discourse on Man’s unfathomable need to surpass nature and the catharsis inherent in climbing walls of stone and ice.

Olga is a driven 15-year-old gymnast training for the Olympics in Kiev in 2013. Her mother is an outspoken journalist with their dictatorial President Yanukovych in her crosshairs. As a result, both of their lives are in danger. So, Olga is sent off to the safe haven of Switzerland, with the hope of joining the Swiss Olympic team. Almost documentary-like in its realism, Elie Grappe’s riveting portrait of a determined young athlete, set against the backdrop of a revolution unfolding in Ukraine, is as much a balletic ode to the passion and discipline of athletes everywhere, as an exploration of the profound, unyielding power of national identity.
