Since its formation, the Earth has experienced five mass extinctions. The sixth is just beginning… when Julia, Tom and their two kids celebrate their son’s 13th birthday on a boat in the middle of the ocean. In the midst of the festivities, a brutal storm rises, nearly capsizing the boat. The family awakens to find itself on a ravaged desert landscape. It seems the Earth has undergone an inconceivable reversal of its magnetic poles, literally draining water from the oceans. Danger lurks everywhere in this post-apocalyptic world, where crazed humans and hungry creatures from the abyss forage for human flesh, and a family must fight for its survival. Because when the poles reverse again, it will be too late.

This documentary presents an epic portrait of winter bird migration. Filmed on all seven continents over four years, the footage is brought together into one portrait of a journey that’s uniformly arduous for all kinds of different birds. Rather than concentrating on statistics and facts, the film near-wordlessly portrays the sheer physical effort demanded of the birds on their disparate routes. Along the way, we see the many dangers they face, from man-made waste to a group of hungry crab.

The journey across frozen tundra proves to be the simplest part of the ritual, as after the egg is hatched, the female must delicately transfer it to the male and make her way back to the distant sea to nourish herself and bring back food to her newborn chick.

TOMORROW

An Under The Milky Way release. |

This entertaining and eye-opening winner of the 2016 Best Documentary César offers some provocative solutions to the hard challenges facing much of humanity. In 2012, extinction experts Anthony Barnosky and Elizabeth Hadly published a paper warning of a coming planetary “sixth extinction” beginning as soon as two generations from now. When environmental activist Cyril Dion shared the article with actress Mélanie Laurent, they decided to team up for a personal journey across ten countries to see what, if anything, could be done. They sought out those pioneers who challenge the old narratives and buck conventional wisdom in agriculture, energy, the economy, democracy, and education. Laurent and Dion quickly understood that they weren’t making another pessimistic, moralizing eco-doc, but an inspiring futuristic vision, because those who are offering the most effective solutions today are actually reinventing the world of tomorrow. With humor, stunning imagery, and a musical assist from Swedish songstress Fredrika Stahl, Tomorrow is an emphatic declaration of hope.

Joined by Anja, Autumn embarks on a journey to reunite with Hope and save her from those who seek to destroy the rainforest and its wildlife. From the director of the Wolf and the Lion.

During WWII Naval Commander Jacques Cousteau helped to develop a device that would enable divers to remain underwater for much longer than previously possible. His aqua-lung became a passport to a spectacular undersea world of wonder.  This polished, big-budget biopic dives headlong into that extraordinary world, and charts the adventurous life of its most revered discoverer, a man the French consider a national treasure. Filming documentaries from his nomadic research vessel the Calypso, Cousteau enchanted an entire generation with the mysteries beneath the waves. With his iconic woolen red beanie, Cousteau, convincingly embodied by a slimmed down Lambert Wilson, quickly became a television icon. But a look behind that iconic mask reveals a more complex man whom many saw as deeply flawed. Cousteau scuttled his personal life with a secret second family, and cynically tethered his brand to Big Oil in a narcissistic grab for international fame. Pierre Niney smolders as Philippe Cousteau, who hopes to win his father over to the cause of environmental activism.
