THE MYSTERY OF PICASSO

| 1956 – 78′ –  Documentary, Classic, Films & Art.
Written by: Henri-Georges Clouzot.
Directed by: Henri-Georges Clouzot.
Starring: Pablo Picasso.
Official Selection Cannes International Film Festival 1955 (Special Jury Prize winner).
In French with English subtitles.
A Kino Lorber release. |

In 1955 Henri-Georges Clouzot joined forces with his friend Pablo Picasso to make an entirely new kind of documentary – one that captured the moment and the mystery of creativity. For the film, Picasso created 20 artworks, ranging from playful B&W sketches to widescreen color paintings. Using inks that bled through the paper, Picasso rapidly created fanciful drawings that Clouzot was able to film from the reverse side, capturing their creation in real time. When the artist decided to paint in oils, the filmmaker switched to color film and employed the magic of stop-motion animation. By contract, almost all of these paintings were destroyed when the film was completed. The Mystery of Picasso is exhilarating, mesmerizing, and unforgettable – one of the greatest documentaries on art ever made.

Cézanne and I traces the parallel paths of the careers and friendship of painter Paul Cezanne and novelist Emile Zola. They loved each other with the ardor of thirteen-year-old boys. Rebellion and curiosity, hopes and doubts, girls and dreams of glory – they shared it all. Paul was rich, Emile poor. They left Aix-en-Provence for Paris and quickly became part of the art scene in Montmartre and Batignolles. They hung out in the same places, slept with the same women. They spat on the bourgeoisie (who spat back). They went skinny-dipping, drank absinthe, starved, only to overeat. Sketched models by day, caressed them by night… Traveled thirty hours by train just to watch a sunset… Now, Paul is a painter and Emile, a writer. Glory has passed Paul by. But Emile has it all: fame, money, the perfect wife, whom Paul once loved. They judge each other, admire each other, and confront each other. They lose touch, meet up again, like a couple who cannot stop loving each other.

TEHACHAPI

| 2024 – 92′ – DOCUMENTARY
Written by: JR
Directed by: JR
Official Competition TAFFF 2024.
In English.
A MasterClass release. |

Once again, incisive visual artist JR (Places) captures the world around him and reflects it back to us in a way that transforms lives, mirrors the humanity within us, and literally changes the way we see the world. This time, his joint subject/canvas is the Tehachapi maximum security prison in Southern California. The original idea was simply to photograph a group of inmates from the prison’s Level Four facility – housing its most violent criminals – create a monumental photo collage, and paste it on the ground of the prison courtyard, where it would remain for just a few days. Yet, in the process, so much more happens. Powerful bonds are formed, a sense of dignity is reclaimed, and an open-hearted dialogue begins… revealing the immense transformational power of art and the hope it can instill in everyone involved, from the inmates and their families, to the prison staff, to the viewers of the finished piece and this immensely moving film. It is a rare experience, and confirms the fact, loud and clear, that art is alive and well and truly does have the power to change lives and the world in a very visceral way.

FRANCOFONIA

| 2016 – 87′ – DOCUMENTARY, HISTORY, WAR, DRAMA.
Written by: Alexander Sokourov.
Directed by: Alexander Sokourov.
Starring: Louis-Do de Lencquesaing, Benjamin Utzerath, Vincent Nemeth, Johanna Korthals Altes, Jean-Claude Caër.
Official Selections Venice International Film Festival 2015, Toronto International Film Festival 2015.
In French, Russian, German with English subtitles.
A Music Box Films release. |

Set against the backdrop of the Louvre Museum’s history and artworks, master director Alexander Sokurov (Russian Ark) applies his uniquely personal vision onto staged reenactments and archives for this fascinating portrait of real-life characters Jacques Jaujard and Count Franziskus Wolff-Metternich and their compulsory collaboration at the Louvre Museum under the Nazi Occupation. These two remarkable men – enemies then collaborators – share an alliance which would become the driving force behind the preservation of museum treasures. In its exploration of the Louvre Museum as a living example of civilization, Francofonia is a stunning and urgently relevant meditation on the essential relationship between art, culture, and history. Throughout his vast filmography – documentary, fiction and others somewhere in between – Alexander Sokurov has demonstrated that a museum is much more than a place to preserve art. Museums are the veritable DNA of a civilization, the living organ of the city where the heart of a nation beats. With Francofonia, he explores a historical chapter that we might know, but whose description does not take into account all the lines that run through it. Sokurov’s body of work includes his “Men of Power” tetralogy (Faust, The Sun [Emperor Hirohito], Taurus [Vladimir Lenin] and Moloch [Adolph Hitler]), Russian Ark (set entirely in St Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum), Mother and Son and Father and Son.

Bonnard, Pierre & Marthe painted over five decades a portrait of Bonnard and his wife Marthe de Méligny who became the cornerstone of her husband’s life and work, appearing in more than a third of his paintings. A beautiful portrait of French artist Pierre Bonnard and his muse. A touching, visually fetching and educational look at the intertwining of art and stubborn romance.
