Cézanne and I traces the parallel paths of the careers and friendship of painter Paul Cezanne and novelist Emile Zola. They loved each other with the ardor of thirteen-year-old boys. Rebellion and curiosity, hopes and doubts, girls and dreams of glory – they shared it all. Paul was rich, Emile poor. They left Aix-en-Provence for Paris and quickly became part of the art scene in Montmartre and Batignolles. They hung out in the same places, slept with the same women. They spat on the bourgeoisie (who spat back). They went skinny-dipping, drank absinthe, starved, only to overeat. Sketched models by day, caressed them by night… Traveled thirty hours by train just to watch a sunset… Now, Paul is a painter and Emile, a writer. Glory has passed Paul by. But Emile has it all: fame, money, the perfect wife, whom Paul once loved. They judge each other, admire each other, and confront each other. It’s the early 1970s. The illegitimate daughter of a French character actor, Maria (Anamaria Vartolomei) is an aspiring young actress, herself. But what seems like a dream come true turns out to be a nightmare. The actress is Maria Schneider. Her co-star is Marlon Brando. The director is Bernardo Bertolucci. The movie is Last Tango in Paris. A highly erotic art film, its raw depiction of rape and graphic sexuality led to international controversy and drew various levels of censorship around the world. The MPAA gave the film an X rating. Bertolucci and Brando both received suspended two-month prison sentences in Italy. But long before the advent of #MeToo and intimacy counsellors, the real toll of the brutal, intentionally calculated on-set sexual and emotional manipulation fell upon Schneider. It devastated her entire life.

During the French Wars of Religion, heiress Marie (Mélanie Thierry) finds that her father, the Marquis de Mézières (Judith Chemla), has arranged for her to marry the Prince of Montpensier (Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet), a war hero with favorable political connections.
