Sadaf Asgari turns in a sublimely restrained, yet nevertheless searing, performance as Fereshteh, a university student forced to hide her illegitimate baby, when her parents announce that they’re stopping by for a surprise visit that very evening. That news sends Fereshteh and her only friend, Atefeh, on an odyssey through the Tehran streets, moving from one unlikely solution to another, in a country where so many are controlled by fear and in a society that doesn’t grant women many rights at all. Director Ali Asgari‘s equally restrained, genuinely moving film illustrates what it means to live life outside of traditional family structures in Iranian society and the price one must pay for that privilege.

Born in Tehran, writer/director Ali Asgari studied cinema in Italy and is an alumnus of the Berlinale Talent Campus 2013. Of his ten short films to date, More Than Two Hours (2013) and The Silence (2016, co-directed with Farnoosh Samadi), were screened in competition in Cannes, and The Baby (2014) premiered in competition in Venice. His shorts have been screened at more than 600 film festivals worldwide, including Sundance, BFI London and Melbourne, and have garnered more than 150 international awards. The script for Disappearance (2017), his first feature, was developed at the Cannes Cinefondation La Residence, was selected for Venice and Toronto Film Festivals, and went on to win several festival prizes. Until Tomorrow, his second feature, premiered at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival. It nabbed the Grand Prize at the Mons Festival; four prizes at the Rome MedFilm Festival, including Best Feature Film and Audience Award; and two prizes at the Mostra de Valencia in Spain, The Golden Palm as Best Film and the Best Actress Award went to his niece and leading lady, Sadaf Asgari.
