Based on the Alexandre Dumas classic, the first installment of Martin Bourboulon‘s star-studded two-part screen adaptation is a swashbuckling romp with a few modern twists. Here, the ever-delightful François Civil stars as D’Artagnan, a young swordsman who travels to Paris from the provinces with a dream of becoming a prestigious musketeer. Awkwardly insulting the king’s three veteran musketeers — Athos, Porthos and Aramis — en route, he suddenly finds himself in a dual with all three simultaneously… Until the enemies become fast friends and join forces to fight off a whole string of bad guys who are in cahoots to undermine the monarchy. The film was a critical and box-office triumph when it opened theatrically in France last April, and its eagerly-awaited second installment is scheduled for release in December.
The son of French producer Frédéric Bourboulon, Martin Bourboulon directed his first short film, Sale Hasard, in 2007. He went on to direct the TV series Un journée dehouf (2005) and numerous commercials. He made his foray into feature films with the wildly popular Daddy or Mommy (2015) and its sequel, Divorce French Style (2016), which was followed by Eiffel, (COLCOA 2021). The Three Musketeers:D’Artagnan was named Best Film of 2023 by The Guardian. Distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films in the U.S., the film will have its American release in December 2023, and its ambitious follow-up, The Three Musketeers:Milady, will be released in 2024.
