Created and directed by celebrated feminist author and film critic Iris Brey, Split recounts the very complex dynamics in the relationship between Anna, a 30-year-old stuntwoman, and Eve, the leading lady she stands in for and soon falls in love with. To further complicate the situation, Anna’s boyfriend is the cinematographer of the film they’re shooting. Putting her scholarly theories into practice, Brey creates a multi-layered story, exploring not only the question of female desire and representation, but also the political and societal underpinnings of lesbian versus heterosexual relations. One might even say the series is a thinking woman’s exploration of eroticism, born out of the filmmaker’s desire to create the feminist utopia of an 80% female film crew.

Armed with a PhD in film theory from New York University, Iris Brey is a French journalist, author and film critic focusing on gender representation and sexuality in cinema and TV. She has been a columnist for Les Inrocks magazine since 2016 and a film critic on La dispute, a radio program on France Culture. In 2016, she published Sex and the Series, a book examining female sexuality on television. In 2017, she launched a TV series of the same name on OCS. Her second book, Le regard féminin, une révolution à l’écran (2020) is an essay on the dominant male gaze in film and the invisibility of women in the history of cinema. She teaches on the French campuses of the University of California and New York University. Split, her first foray into filmmaking, had its world premiere at this year’s Series Mania festival in Lille.
