Léa Seydoux brilliantly holds the center of Bruno Dumont’s unexpected, unsettling new film, which starts out as a satire of the contemporary news media before steadily spiraling out into something richer and darker. Never one to shy away from provoking his viewers, Dumont (The Life of Jesus, NYFF35) casts Seydoux as France de Meurs, a seemingly unflappable superstar TV journalist whose career, homelife, and psychological stability are shaken after she carelessly drives into a young delivery man on a busy Paris street. This accident triggers a series of self-reckonings, as well as a strange romance that proves impossible to shake. A film that teases at redemption while refusing to grant absolution, France is tragicomic and deliciously ambivalent—a very 21st-century treatment of the difficulty of maintaining identity in a corrosive culture.

Trailer

Closing night of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival Critics’ Week, HIPPOCRATES: DIARY OF A FRENCH DOCTOR  is a darkly comic portrait of a Paris hospital as seen through the eyes of a young intern, Benjamin, played by Vincent Lacoste (Eden), who begins his internship at the hospital ward run by his father. Confident and determined that he will quickly become a successful doctor, Vincent soon realizes that the reality of the medical world is a lot grimmer than what he had imagined. He is also overshadowed by his co-junior partner Abdel, a foreign doctor, played by Reda Kateb (Lost River, Zero Dark Thirty) who’s obviously more competent than he is but who’s forced to work as an intern because of his immigrant status. When Vincent makes a medical error, his father quickly covers it up but Abdel is not fooled…
A charming counterpoint to shows like GREY’S ANATOMY and HOUSE, the film is framed as a rite of passage set against a social backdrop and offers an ultra-realistic vision of the French public medical system. Helmed by Thomas Lilti, an M.D himself, the film was a box-office hit in its native France, earning Reda Kateb a Cesar for best supporting actor.

Trailer

Actresses Valerie Bruni Tedeschi and Micaela Ramozzotti are at the height of their games as comically mismatched escapees from a mental institution. The story begins in a stately Tuscan villa converted into a retreat for unstable women. Beatrice (Tedeschi) is an entitled, manically motor-mouthed compulsive liar. Donatella is a withdrawn depressive, deeply damaged by life. As much as Donatella dwells on the past, Beatrice lives for the moment, so when she sees an opportunity to get away from hospital staff, she seizes it, with Donatella in tow. The two hit the road on an outlaw odyssey that includes sexy cars, expensive dinners, fortune tellers, an ex-this and a former-that, and any manner of self-medicating, all without a Euro to scrounge between them. They aim to find happiness, but that turns out to be a tricky thing to nail down. Even a lighthearted jaunt in the Tuscan sun can take you to a deeper, more emotionally resonant destination.

Trailer

1921, the beginning of the Golden Twenties. Not far from Paris. It is party day at Marguerite Dumont’s castle. Like every year, an array of music lovers gathers around a great cause at the owner’s place. Nobody knows much about this woman except that she is rich and that her whole life is devoted to her passion: music. Marguerite sings. She sings wholeheartedly, but she sings terribly out of tune. In ways quite similar to the Castafiore, Marguerite has been living her passion in her own bubble, and the hypocrite audience, always coming in for a good laugh, acts as if she was the diva she believes she is. When a young, provocative journalist decides to write a rave article on her latest performance, Marguerite starts to believe even further in her talent. This gives her the courage she needs to follow her dream. Despite her husband’s reluctance, and with the help of a has-been divo, both funny and mean, she decides to train for her first recital in front of a crowd of complete strangers.

Two of French cinema’s biggest stars shine in this bittersweet drama about the unlikely friendship that develops between Claire (Catherine Frot), a talented but tightly wound midwife, and Béatrice (Catherine Deneuve), the estranged, free-spirited mistress of Claire’s late father. Though polar opposites in almost every way, the two come to rely on each other as they cope with the unusual circumstance that brought them together in this sharp character study from the César-award winning director Martin Provost (SERAPHINE – also available on COLCOA VIRTUAL CINEMA).

Three siblings reunite at their home in picturesque Burgundy to save the family vineyard in this tender tale of a new generation finding its own unique blend from acclaimed director Cédric Klapisch (L’AUBERGE ESPAGNOLE, CHINESE PUZZLE). Jean (Pio Marmaï), the black sheep of the family, unexpectedly returns home from a decade abroad to reconnect with his hospitalized father. He’s welcomed by his strong-willed sister, Juliette (Ana Girardot), who took over the reins of the vineyard after their father fell ill, and Jeremie (François Civil), the youngest of the three who has recently married into one of the region’s more prestigious wine families. Their father passes shortly after Jean’s return, leaving them with the estate and a looming inheritance tax of half a million dollars. As four seasons and two harvests go by, Jean, Juliette, and Jeremie have to learn to reinvent their relationship and trust in each other as they work to preserve the land that ties them together.

Gauthier, a young journalist, finds a letter suggesting he might be the son of Guy Jamet, a 72-year-old French pop singer who was famous from the 60s to the 80s. As the old-time crooner embarks on tour to promote his newly released cover album, Gauthier follows his biological father under the pretext of filming a documentary about his career, without revealing his recent discovery. Behind the scenes, on stage and on the road, Gauthier will learn everything about his father while putting together a moving portrait retracing Guy’s life.

French comic and director Alex Lutz portrays a pop singer from the 1960s in a mockumentary portrait of a seventy-something pop star who has seen better days but refuses to leave the stage. Directed by and starring 39-year-old French stand-up comic Alex Lutz, it’s a good-humored tour de force and audience pleaser.

The decades-spanning tumultuous romance of a quintessentially French couple is chronicled in the thought-provoking and scathingly funny MR. & MRS. ADELMAN. Told in flashback from the early 1970s forward, this epic love-hate relationship begins as angst-ridden writer Victor meets Sarah, a brilliant doctoral student who falls head-over-heels. A complicated courtship and eventual marital discord ensue, as the egocentric Victor becomes a literary superstar and the enigmatic Sarah—his muse and steadfast source of strength—lingers in the shadows. Intimately detailing the intricacies of a lifetime of shared highs and lows, this saga of passion, betrayal, tragedy and unexpected twists of fate is co-written by the film’s two stars, Nicolas Bedos and his life partner Doria Tillier. Audience Award winner at the Hamptons International Film Festival and COLCOA French Film Festival.
